A fellow stopped by to stock up on some things and also wanted 10 gallons of vinegar.  So I asked if he had time to take a afternoon trip to the Amish and loaded up the empty containers.  I wasn't thinking about the cold winter we have been having and their vinegar tanks are in barns and all frozen.  They had just made some fresh apple cider juice and we picked up 8 fresh made gallons.  This old Amish orchard is one of the few in the country that make fresh apple juice clear into Spring when they have the extra apples.  Most common non Amish apple orchards makes apple cider in October and then quit.

The fellow picked up some trays of honey comb and 5 gallon bucket of honey and it still ended up being a fun day and we can stop back by when the vinegar thaws out and have another trip back into the times of the horse and buggy days.

Question:

Is Braggs AC Vinegar a good quality product to start ingesting?

Answer:

All vinegar in a glass bottle has been killed permanently, which means it is no longer vinegar, it is now dead apple juice water that should 'spoil"….

Braggs appears to be vinegar where they purposely pour in some dead mother to make the consumer think they are getting vinegar…..but who knows what they did to sterilize it…..don't know and do not care. ALL I do know is that no one can put real vinegar in a jar and put it on a store shelf. They can only put dead vinegar that they had to sterilize.

I 'happened' to make a small batch of vinegar. From non-commercial apples even. Just juiced them and put it into glass jugs. Let it be warm awhile and the mother developed, then its been in a fridge since then. It's more than 3 years old now.

Response:

I stopped reading after the first paragraph…vinegar needs to be warm form those 3 years and exposed to air and bacteria………..

I get my apple cider vinegar from the Amish and make what I call apple/pineapple vinegar. I throw away the mother once/twice a year but otherwise the vinegar has the same properties as the mother does, so it is not that the mother is bad, it is just too gross to consume in my opinion. The vinegar will grow a new mother quickly.

As far as clean? Raw Vinegar is apple juice eaten by a massive amount of live bacteria, so we can't call it clean, to clean it would be to kill it.

I recently learned that the Amish healer uses 1 quart of raw vinegar in the bath for a child that has a high fever and says it works great, but the child will smell like a pickle when cured!!! (they don't have showers).

Another idea on freeze dried vinegar would be the "mother". Many people seem to think the "mother" is a desirable product; I personally always throw it away and it always keeps growing and you need to throw it away periodically or it can get very thick and very heavy and end up falling down into the solution and then make a mess if you have a valve at the bottom of your tank.

Freeze drying the mother would turn it into flakes, but such stuff to me would be very experimental. I trust the vinegar, but the mother always a bit nasty for my taste. I would use the mother to restart new vinegar, but I am not one to eat such stuff, while in some countries they make teas and all sorts of stuff from it.
